Job Opening: Head of Political and Public Diplomacy Team at the Royal Danish Embassy in Bogota, Colombia

The Royal Embassy of Denmark in Bogota, Colombia, is looking for a political advisor who will also lead and coordinate the work of the Embassy’s new Political and Public Diplomacy Team.

Do you have strong reporting and analytical skills, proven experience managing teams for results and profound knowledge of Colombian and regional affairs? Are you also proficient in English and do you have some knowledge of Danish or another related Nordic language? Then you might be the candidate we are looking for.

The Danish Embassy in Bogotá is reorganising and establishing a new separate team dealing with political affairs, public diplomacy and cultural exchange. The team will be handling issues related to domestic developments in Colombia and the other countries covered by the Danish Embassy in Bogotá (Bolivia, Costa Rica, Panama and Venezuela), regional affairs and bilateral relations with Denmark – gathering information, writing reports, participating in relevant meetings. The team will also be in charge of the external communication of the Embassy and the planning and execution of public diplomacy and cultural events. As a team leader, the new advisor is expected to be able to take a strategic approach and provide sound political advice to help promote Danish interests and values.

The successful candidate will coordinate a team consisting of two fulltime advisors and one intern.

Main responsibilities

  •  Leading the team dealing with political affairs, public diplomacy and culture in close coordination with the Ambassador and Deputy Head of Mission
  • Participating in meetings with representatives of government, civil society organisations in Colombia and other countries in the region
  • Representing the Embassy in certain coordination formats, for example some EU working groups
  • Elaborate notes, draft reports and provide updates to Danish authorities. Priority topics include the Colombian peace process and human rights, environmental issues, regional developments and sectoral policies of Colombia
  • Plan and prepare for visits of Danish institutions and organisations; maintain cooperation and information exchange with Danish stakeholders on a day-to-day basis
  • Managing the Embassy’s strategic communications and social media activities in accordance with the Embassy strategy
  • In charge of organisation of cultural and public diplomacy events, in close cooperation with other Embassy departments
  • Establish and maintain a network of relevant stakeholders in Colombia, including civil society
  • Supervision of certain administrative tasks related to the activities of the department

Required professional and personal skills

  • MA or PHD degree in political science or international relations or similar.
  • Fluent in English (minimum: C1 level) and Spanish, both in speaking and writing. Proven experience in working in both languages
  • Knowledge of Danish or another related Nordic language (Norwegian, Swedish) as well as of Danish/Nordic societies and politics would be a strong asset
  • In-depth understanding of the political landscape and political dynamics in Colombia and in the wider region
  • At least 5 years’ experience working in an international political environment – for example as employee at an embassy, an international organisation, state institution or NGO.
  • Proven experience in analysis, reporting and political advisory functions
  • Previous involvement in organising/preparing visits and events, such as conferences
  • Dynamic, with a high sense of responsibility, strong organizational skills, ability to establish priorities and execute plans efficiently
